Why this scenario maximizes exertional heat stroke risk

A wildfire that burns for five consecutive nights is not a single spike of heat exposure. It is a cumulative stack of risk factors, shift after shift, all converging on the same physiological threat.

Unpredictable engagement duration is the first factor. A rotation planned for two hours can stretch into four or six when the fire front shifts direction without warning. On the Gironde fires, Meteo-France forecast a probable heatwave from Tuesday, with highs expected up to 40 degrees Celsius and drier winds, a combination that further complicates suppression efforts and extends crew exposure.

Radiant heat from the flame front compounds ambient temperature. Firefighters working near the head of a fire experience temperatures far above what weather stations record, even before the official heatwave has peaked.
