Since August 1st, around twenty French départements have again been placed under orange heat warnings, including Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Jura and Var, with highs expected up to 35°C. This is the fifth significant heat wave France has faced since the start of summer 2026, and Météo-France warns the heat is likely to persist into mid-August. For event organisers and EHS managers, the question is no longer just about this weekend's forecast. It is about the point at which a one-off weather event becomes a structural constraint to plan for, rather than something to improvise every time an alert is issued.

A summer that has already reshaped the calendar

This fifth episode follows an unbroken run of heat events since June. In mid-June, the Ekiden du Stade Français relay marathon in Paris and the Dorlisheim vineyard marathon were both cancelled on the recommendation of local authorities, despite thousands of registered runners. In early July, the French government triggered its "extreme heat" Orsec emergency plan for the first time in its history. By mid-July, the Solidays and Garorock festivals and every Paris fire brigade Bastille Day ball had been cancelled or reworked, and a stage of the Tour de France was shortened because of the heat. France's Ministry of Sports has repeatedly reminded federations and organisers to rely on the WBGT index, warning that above 32°C an event's continuation must be reassessed.

From one-off response to standing infrastructure

What is notable about this fifth episode is not its intensity in isolation but its repetition. An event organiser, EHS manager, or medical team that improvised a cooling setup for the June heat wave, then again for July, is now doing so for a third, fourth, or fifth time in the same season.
