Once a church decides to invest in immersion baptism equipment, a practical question follows: inflatable baptistry or rigid folding structure? Both exist on the market, with very different trade-offs.
The inflatable baptistry
Advantages. Lightweight, easy to store deflated, usually a lower upfront cost.
Limits. Inflating takes time, typically several minutes with an electric pump, which means planning ahead. The soft PVC structure is also more prone to wear: a punctured chamber or a faulty valve is enough to make the baptistry unusable on the day. On uneven flooring, stability depends entirely on air pressure, which can feel unsteady during immersion.
The rigid folding baptistry
Advantages. A frame structure (typically steel or aluminum) provides constant stability, independent of air pressure. Setup happens by unfolding rather than inflating, which sharply cuts installation time. A food-grade stainless steel frame cleans and disinfects easily, for repeated use over many years with no degradation.
Limits. Folded weight is generally higher than an inflatable model, though a good wheeled carry bag largely offsets that in practice.
What actually matters for a church
For occasional use (a handful of baptisms a year), the lower upfront cost may point toward an inflatable model. But for a church that practices immersion regularly, or that wants to organize a baptism without hours of setup planning, the rigid folding structure becomes the more reliable option: it sets up in a few minutes, with no electric pump or pressure to monitor, and its lifespan far exceeds that of an inflatable structure subject to PVC wear.
That's the choice behind the Kollder portable baptistry, built on the same stainless steel structure used for Kollder One™ emergency cooling equipment, a context where setup reliability leaves no room for improvisation. Full specifications are available on the portable baptistry for immersion baptism page.
