Many churches buy a portable baptistry once every ten or fifteen years. A few common mistakes keep coming up with this first purchase, and they're easy to avoid once you know what to check.

Undersizing the pool to save money

The most common mistake: choosing a compact format to cut the price, without checking that it still allows full immersion of an adult lying down. The result on the day of the service: an uncomfortable, sometimes impractical moment for some candidates. Always check the actual dimensions (at least 79 in / 200 cm long, 20 to 24 in / 50 to 60 cm of water depth) before stopping at the listed price.

Overlooking actual setup time

Some product listings advertise a "quick" setup without specifying whether that means a couple of minutes or half an hour with several people. A setup that pulls in two or three volunteers before every service ends up weighing on the schedule, week after week. Always ask for a precise setup time, by one person.

Choosing a material that isn't built for repeated use

An inflatable PVC coating or an untreated wood finish wears out faster than a stainless steel structure, especially with repeated cycles of filling, draining, and folding. For equipment meant to last years, the material in contact with water deserves as much attention as the purchase price.

Forgetting about storage footprint

A baptistry that takes up too much room once folded ends up shoved in a corner, hard to access, or eventually abandoned after a few uses. Check the folded weight and dimensions before buying, especially if your church's storage space is limited.

Not planning for fill and drain

A pool holding several hundred liters needs to fill and drain easily, without having to lift it full. Check for a drain valve and confirm there's water access near where the service will take place.

Relying on listed price alone
