An immersion baptism should be safe and dignified for every candidate, whatever their age or physical condition. A few simple principles cover the most common situations.
Always two people in the water
- Never immerse a candidate alone. The officiant is joined by an assistant in the pool: one guides the gesture, the other supports and steadies.
- A third person stays at the edge of the pool to help with the entry and exit.
Getting in and out of the pool
- Provide a stable step or stool, a steadying hand, and non-slip footing inside and outside the pool.
- A flat, firm pool floor on a stable structure keeps anything from shifting under weight. The Kollder portable baptistry sits on a stainless steel frame with 6 support points and cross-bracing, with no reliance on air pressure.
Elderly people or people with reduced mobility
- Lower the candidate from a seated position rather than standing, with two assistants in the water.
- Keep the time under water to a minimum and describe every move before making it.
- If walking is difficult, set the pool up as close as possible to the changing area to limit movement.
Children and teenagers
- Adjust the water level to the child's height.
- An adult supports at all times; a parent can step into the pool with the child.
Electrical safety
- Any heater or pump must be removed and unplugged before anyone enters the water.
- Power protected by a GFCI/RCD, with no extension leads near the pool.
Medical conditions
- Ask candidates in advance to flag a heart condition, epilepsy, recent surgery, or strong fear of water.
- Adapt the sequence (seated position, shorter time, extra support) or seek medical advice if in doubt.
Hygiene between services
- Clean the structure between services and use fresh water for each session.
- A food-grade stainless steel structure disinfects quickly, with no degradation over time.
