- A timed deployment by a non-specialist operator, not just a manufacturer technician
- A test on terrain representative of actual operational conditions (sand, mud, uneven ground)
- Verification of claimed environmental resistance, ideally through independent test data rather than declarative claims
Assess supply security
For safety equipment intended for operational use, continuity of supply matters as much as initial performance:
- Can the vendor guarantee spare parts lead times compatible with deployed operations?
- Is the supply chain exposed to single points of failure (a single component supplier, a single subcontractor)?
- Does the vendor have production capacity to support fleet renewal, not just an initial order?
Verify operational references
Contact the units or services cited as references directly, beyond the list supplied by the bidder. A reference from civilian or event use does not carry the same weight as a reference from actual operational use.
Warning signs
- A vendor unable to provide independent test data for environmental durability claims
- A bid that does not specify spare parts lead times for deployed configurations
- A gap between performance demonstrated under controlled conditions and what is claimed for operational use

- Validating equipment based on civilian or event use alone, without operational-condition verification
- Not questioning supply security, particularly for a newer or smaller vendor
- Accepting a demonstration run by the manufacturer itself without a test by a non-specialist operator
