- 30 to 40% price, assessed on total cost of ownership
- 10 to 20% references and after-sales support
Calculate total cost of ownership, not purchase price alone
The sticker price only reflects part of the real cost over the equipment's service life. Factor in:
- The initial purchase price
- The cost and lead time of replacing wear parts
- The expected service life under regular use
- Any training or maintenance costs
Equipment that is cheaper to buy but has scarce or costly spare parts can end up more expensive over three to five years than an initially pricier option.
Verify claims before scoring
- Require a timed demonstration, run by a non-specialist operator, on terrain representative of your actual use
- Contact cited references directly, prioritizing those whose use case is closest to yours
- Cross-check the documentation supplied against the manufacturer's public information to spot inconsistencies
Warning signs not to ignore
- A price significantly below other bids with no clear justification
- Consistently declining or postponing any demonstration before a decision
- Stated performance that shifts depending on who you ask or which document you check
- No clear data on spare parts availability

- Deciding on purchase price alone, without total cost of ownership
- Trusting a spec sheet without field verification
- Consulting only one vendor out of habit or time pressure
