Twenty two major wildfires, more than 101,000 hectares burned since the start of the year, and a national state of emergency declared around Madrid. A season already well above the decade average
According to the provisional assessment from Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) and the European Copernicus system, as of July 22 Spain had already recorded 22 major wildfires this year, compared to a ten-year average of 9 for the same period. Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, has classified fire risk as very high or extreme across nearly the entire country, with temperatures topping 40 degrees Celsius and humidity dropping below 20 percent in several regions, conditions AEMET itself describes as especially favorable for fire ignition and spread.
The La Mierla fire, in Guadalajara province, forced the evacuation of entire towns, including all 100 residents of Zarzuela de Jadraque, sheltered at a Red Cross center. The town's mayor summed up the toll, noting his firefighters had to run from one end of the village to the other to put out flare-ups, in heat that gave them no relief. In Tarragona, the Paüls fire mobilized more than 460 personnel, including Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME), to stabilize a blaze that eventually burned over 3,300 hectares with a 44-kilometer perimeter, under winds gusting to 90 km/h. In La Segarra, Lleida, a fire believed to have started from agricultural machinery burned more than 5,500 hectares in under 48 hours, killing two people.

The same week Spain declared a state of emergency around Madrid and in Avila province, France also activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for its own Gironde wildfires. Radiant heat from the flame front stacks on top of already extreme ambient temperatures, creating a large gap between what weather stations record and what a firefighter working directly against the fire actually experiences.
What Cool First, Transport Second demands, wherever the fireground is
The ACSM Expert Consensus Statement 2023 and the IOC's recommendations (Hosokawa Y, Racinais S et al., BJSM 2021) converge on one point: when exertional heat stroke is suspected, cold water immersion must begin on scene, before transport, to bring core body temperature below 39 degrees Celsius within 30 minutes of collapse. Casa et al. (Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, 2007) put the cooling rate of this method at 0.35 degrees Celsius per minute, roughly ten times faster than wet towels or ice packs. The Korey Stringer Institute, tracking more than 401 cases treated under this protocol, reports a 100 percent survival rate when temperature drops below 40 degrees Celsius within that window.
