The toll from earlier in the season was already severe. On July 30, wildfires forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Crete, destroying farmland, olive groves and homes, and killing three firefighters. Wildfires were also reported on Paros. In early July, fires damaged property in Thessaloniki, and Greek authorities counted dozens of separate fires burning across the country on a single day, July 5.
