While Germany was recording its deadliest heat season since 1992, with nearly 14,000 heat-related deaths, its fire services were confronting a vegetation fire danger index at its maximum level across several states. By June 2026, the Forest Fire Danger Index (Waldbrandgefahrenindex, WGI) had reached level 4 across large parts of southern and eastern Germany. The Grassland Fire Index (Grasland-Feuerindex, GFI) also reached level 4 across much of the country.

The ACSM Expert Consensus Statement 2023 and IOC guidance (Hosokawa Y, Racinais S et al., BJSM 2021) are unambiguous: when exertional heat stroke is suspected in a responder, cold water immersion must begin on scene, before transport, with the goal of bringing core temperature below 39°C within 30 minutes of collapse. In a country where wildfire has historically ranked below flooding or storms as a fire service priority, thermal rehabilitation doctrine for responders remains less developed than in France's SDIS network or in fire services across southern Europe.
